Herbs add flavor to any dish whether it is cooked or a salad and when the herbs are used fresh from your indoor garden it is all the more tasty.

Placing your indoor herb garden in your kitchen will provide such a wonderful aroma and will turn your cooking into dishes like the gourmet chefs serve.

Watching where you place your herb garden, getting the correct temperature, light and water, will allow you to have your herbs indoors, ready to use, even if you cook a midnight snack, no going out into the garden after dark to find your herbs. Here are a few tips to help you get your indoor herb garden going

Start Off The Right Way

It is important to take into consideration the size of the pots you wish to grow the herbs in. If you want larger pots, then your best choice would be to grow several plants in the one pot. This is ideal if you want to group your herbs, like the ones that are best with Italian cooking or Thai or French cuisine. Single variety herbs can be grown in pots that are approximately six to twelve inches deep.

The pots you choose will determine how you water your indoor herb garden. You choose what will work for you in your home. You can get self watering pots, with these, you fill a reservoir with water and it is released slowly to the plant week, you can also add the liquid fertilizer this way too. Self watering pots come with all the instructions for their use.

One of the biggest causes of plant loss with potted plants is, over-watering. I think most people have been guilty of this at some stage. Always do the finger test. Before giving your herb garden some water, test with your finger by poking your finger into the potting mix, you need to go down a little way. Depending on how damp the soil is, will be how much water you add to the pot.

Finding The Right Spot For Your Indoor Herb Garden

The ideal place for your indoor herb garden is in the kitchen. What an indoor herb garden needs is, mostly the temperature in a kitchen is fine for a herb garden. Natural or artificial light is also needed. A dry atmosphere is not ideal, if you are able to install a humidifier that would compensate but if not then get a hand spray for watering. Indoor herb gardens need the outside growing conditions replicated inside as much as is possible.

Helpful Tip For Watering Indoor Herb Gardens.

Most herbs require the same amount of water with rare exceptions therefore try and check when you purchase the herb for gardening and/or read carefully the seeds package and if extra care and watering required place that particular herb in a separate pots.

Try to group herbs with the same growing requirements for your indoor herb garden, this will make the watering and care much easier. As they are in separate pots, placing herbs with like requirements together should makes things easier for you.

If you enjoy gardening, but aren't able to have a garden, it can
be a frustrating experience. You may feel this way if you live
in an apartment, since you don't have a yard of your own. It
does not have to be the case, however. You can garden indoors.
To do this, you simply have to be able to make the best use of
the space that you have.

Plants In Every Room

You do not have to fill each room with its own garden of plants.
Having just one plant in each room is a great system. Each room
will have it's own natural scent and look. The plants will
cleanse the air quality in each room as well.

You don't have to be restricted to one plant per room, though.
One room can be designated as a "green room". Essentially this
room could be like bringing your outside garden inside. A room
with a large window or balcony works best for this. To fully
enjoy this space, you can add large, comfortable chairs and cool
colors. It will give you an escape in your home--a place to
relax.

You should take the conditions of each room into account before
choosing which plants to place where. After you figure out the
conditions (amount of sunlight, humidity, etc.), you can research
which plants will likely do best in specific areas. Bathrooms
are typically more humid than the rest of the house, for example.
You should note that it is not very good to put plants on the
window sill, since the window magnifies the effect of the sun.
This can overwhelm the plant.

If you are looking for pleasant aromas, dried plants and flowers
can work very well as part of your indoor garden. If tied
together, plants like dried lavender can be hung around the home
to add relaxing, nice smells. The scents can last a few weeks.

Another variation to indoor gardening is to grow herbs. You can
buy kits with a variety of herb seeds and the materials needed to
cultivate them. You can find them at your local garden center.
A great place to put these are on the window sill of your
kitchen. They love sunlight and provide pleasant aromas as they
grow. You can also use them in your cooking once they have
grown.

The yucca plant can handle a variety of indoor growing conditions found in apartments from lighting to space needs.

Like many people before you, you may have liked the idea of growing herbs, whether for cooking or for their aesthetics. If, again like many people, your space is limited, then perhaps what you need is an indoor herb garden. Although commonly the windowsill is the place of choice for an indoor herb garden, do not think that this is the only place you that you can have one. You can have an indoor herb garden in any place your imagination lets you. The only limitations being the need for light and perhaps just as importantly an area away from children or animals. Next, think about which herbs you will grow, bearing in mind that some can become quite large very quickly and will eat up any space you may have.

Not all plants grow well together in an indoor herb garden and some will hybridize quickly resulting in plants that are neither one nor the other. Two of these that come to mind are Oregano and Peppermint.

When choosing your plants, bear in mind that different herbs can be used for different purposes, for instance, are you going to use them in a Potpourri? Maybe, though more than likely it will be for their uses in cooking. Imagine yourself adding a piece of mint to you steaming Potatoes or covering you Sunday Roast Chicken with Oregano grown in your own indoor herb garden.
Do you like to consume organic food? People are becoming more aware of what they eat, so it could be a very good idea to start an organic indoor garden of your own so you can be sure of eating vegetables that are free of unhealthy chemicals. One of the best things with organic indoor gardening is it doesn’t need a lot of space to grow a good crop of vegetables. A small balcony or an accessible rooftop are all you need to get started with organic indoor gardening.

Even if you live somewhere that doesn’t have anything like a balcony or flat rooftop, you can still indulge in organic indoor gardening. Not having these doesn’t mean you won’t be able to garden. If you have some space you can devote to your plants inside your house, you can easily set up your organic indoor garden. You can use artificial lighting for the plants so you won’t need to be concerned about having enough sunlight.

In addition to having a good supply of organic vegetables, there are a number of advantages to organic indoor gardening. Professionals insist that stress can be relieved by gardening. Indoor gardening can help relieve stress because it doesn’t require much thought or hard-on-your-back work. It can be a great way to be calmed and relaxed after a hard day at the office.

Save Yourself From Yourself

As well as relieving stress, indoor gardening has the bonus of saving money on your grocery bill. Since you will be growing some of your very own food, a lot less money will be spent at the grocery store. But experts say that you really save a lot on recreation and health expenses. How does this work? Studies show that people involved in organic indoor gardening are more content as a result and have less of a need to leave home to find such contentment in the spending of money for pleasure. If you don’t like coming back to an empty lonesome house with nothing to look forward to, you can keep yourself happily busy with as organic indoor garden.

According to studies, medical expenses are high because some much money is spent of anti-depressants. It is believed that without constructive release of pent up frustrations and stress through some sort of outlet, many Americans end up suffering from depression. A hobby that interests them, such as indoor gardening, helps to reduce episodes of depression in many people.

To create the perfect small indoor garden, simply choose your favorite exotic plants and get started. Sounds easy, right? There are, of course, a few conditions to consider. Specifically, you must consider the conditions of your living space. Most indoor gardens can thrive no matter where you are, because the temperature will be regulated and the humidity will vary perhaps only slightly. The keys to a strong and healthy indoor garden are how you care for it and the nutrients in the garden soil.

Miniature plants like bonsai trees, philodendrons, ivy, freesia, orchids, and more can all thrive under the proper conditions. This means that potting and attentiveness to the humidity, including the potting soil you choose. Many nurseries will offer plant food that can be added to the soil via water you provide for them. Just as important as the act of watering plants itself is the water you feed to them. Many people believe that a garden requires a whole lot of hard work, but the amount of work can be diminished based on many factors.

If your garden is smaller, kept indoors, and the plants you keep in your garden are not as temperamental as some other kinds of plants , taking care of an indoor garden can require a very little amount of effort. Depending on what it is you want to grow, you could have a simple, elegant, fragrant, and colorful additional ambiance for your home. Pots can improve the overall style of your garden. There are many attractive and distinctive pots for planting. If you stick with the plastic plant containers in which your plant was originally sold, they will serve the general purpose, but you lose a lot in the presentation. You could also create a planter or an indoor garden bed, sort of like a sandbox but with soil and fertilizer inside.

If you choose to make a garden bed to house your exotic plants and flowers, be sure it is a compatible size for each specific plants' needs. Your plants will grow and the roots will need space for this growth. What has been referred to as a "table garden" in books and magazines everywhere is a great solution for any residential décor. The possibilities are virtually endless.

Organic gardening sounds intimidating to a lot of people. After all, to qualify for the organic standard, foods from organic farms have to meet some pretty tough criteria. However, it's not really hard to get started on your own organic indoor garden. What's difficult to do on a large scale is simple inside your own home. While you won't be able to grow a lot, you'll have the satisfaction of having your own delicious herbs and small vegetables. You'll also know that they're good for you, because you have control over every aspect of the growing process.

The first step in starting your organic indoor gardening process is deciding what to grow. This will be limited by the amount of space you have, and your conditions. Ideally, apartment gardeners would like to have a flat space, such as a balcony or the rooftop available. However, if you're limited to gardening indoors, you can still succeed. You'll probably have to stick to smaller plants, unless you have a large sunny space that you can dedicate to your organic indoor gardening. Pay attention to the amount of sun your prospective garden space gets throughout the day, and the humidity and other conditions in your home or apartment. Different plants need different amounts of light each day. If you can't provide several hours of full sun, plants such as cherry tomatoes or small peppers won't grow well. You can still grow the type that prefer shade, however.

Herbs are a popular organic indoor garden starter, and make great windowsill plants. You can get them started right in the kitchen, if there's enough sun and a way to protect them from damage. Imagine having your own fresh spice rack, in the form of an organic indoor garden right next to your cooking area. Choose from popular herbs like basil and oregano, or add some unusual ones, such as cilantro, lemon balm, or garlic chives. If you have the space, small varieties of tomatoes, peppers, and even string beans can be grown right in your apartment. Some people have even managed to grow tubs of new potatoes, baby carrots and other root vegetables indoors. Avoid climbing plants, bushy varieties, and plants that take up a lot of space.

It's easy to make your indoor gardening organic. Just don't use fertilizer, pesticides, or other chemicals, and choose seeds from organic sources. Since indoor gardens don't suffer much from pests, molds, or weeds, it's easy to do without the extra chemicals that farms or a big outdoor garden might need. Check on your organic indoor gardening progress regularly to make sure your plants getting enough light and water, however. Plants living in containers take more water than those planted in the ground, and can dry up quickly. Not enough light, and your tomatoes can become spindly, your basil thin, and your peppers will drop their flowers without ever fruiting. A little care, however, and you'll soon be able to enjoy the fruits of your efforts. Plus, you'll know they're good for you!

Bring nature inside and start an indoor garden to make your home more colorful, but be careful to follow these indoor gardening tips. Plants are so soothing to look at and many indoor gardeners feel that they add that extra little spark to any room. An added benefit is that plants are nature's purifier, taking carbon dioxide out of our air and changing it into oxygen cleansing the air in your home. Mix up your plants; try a few exotics or tropical plants, anything you choose will make your room shine with their fresh beauty and their colorful blooms. To maintain their beauty here are some indoor gardening tips to keep your plants lush and healthy.

Light is the one thing you cannot skimp on. Without this essential ingredient your plants will wither and die. Each and every plant have different requirements so for one indoor gardening tips here is some things to look for when shopping for houseplants. Ask the person at the nursery center how much light the plants you are consider will need. Some plants need direct sunlight while others crave indirect sunlight. For a direct sun plant, place the container near a window that faces south. For indirect plants they can be placed near a window but keep them far enough away so their foliage will not burn. Plants that require little light, like philodendrons, African Violets or ferns, can be arranged anywhere in the room as long as a little natural light filters in.

Indoor gardening tips on watering your plants are always needed. If you over-water your plants you are subjecting them to insects and disease and you will eventually kill it. Over-watering will also rot the roots. Plants hate wet feet. Once you have discussed the watering needs with the nurseryman invest a small amount of money into a water gauge. The gauge will tell you the moisture level of the plants soil. They are extremely helpful in deciding whether to water or not and really only cost a little money, a very wise investment.

Another indoor gardening tip is to fertilize. At the nursery center they fertilized the plants to encourage them to grow so they can sell them to you. If you do not fertilize your plants they will droop and wither. Find out from the center or from the internet what each plants feeding schedule should be. The secret to keep happy, lush plants is to feed them on a regular basis.

You want to keep a close eye on each plant for any pests. If you find pests on one plant isolate it from the rest and treat it immediately. Try not to use pesticides on your plants especially if it is a plant you will eat, like herbs.

A very good pesticide free natural formula for eradication of pests is:

In a jar, combine 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake vigorously. In an empty spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup water. Use at ten-day intervals (or more often if needed) to rid plants of whiteflies, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests.

If you follow these few indoor gardening tips you will have beautiful houseplants that enliven every room. Take time to enjoy your indoor garden. Let it relax and soothe you, after all that’s why you planted an indoor garden.

Sometimes you do not have enough space or the weather is not right to create an outdoor garden. In cases like this there is the option of indoor gardening. Indoor gardening allows you to grow plants and other things inside where you can always have a beautiful garden.

You can grow almost anything in your indoor garden, but the key to success is planning. You have to understand the perfect elements that make indoor gardening bountiful.

Supply Needs

There are certain things you will need for your indoor garden. You will want to gather the following supplies:

- plants or seeds

- soil

- watering can or sprayer

- pots

- covers

- fertilizer

You will also need some basic knowledge to help you in setting up your garden and maintaining it. You may want to learn more about:

- growing plants from seeds

- terrariums and using them

- types of plants that grow well inside

- sun, water and food requirements of your chosen plants

- soil considerations

Getting Started

Once you have your supplies you can get started planting your indoor garden. You should have a nice space that allows for the sunlight needed for your chosen plants. You should also have an area that you can dedicate to the plants so they do not need to be moved around.

You want to set up the pots and begin planting your seeds or plants. Make sure to cover the area so you do not get soil all over your floor or table area. Wear gloves to protect your hands. You can use the same tools you would use outside to plant, like a hand shovel.

Terrariums

Terrariums are a great option for indoor gardening. They can help produce the perfect environment for your plants that combat many of the common problems that occur in indoor gardening.

Consider creating terrarium gardens using clear plastic items as the covers. Here is a basic terrarium set up:

- Do not use a container with holes in the bottom. Layer the bottom with pea gravel and a layer of charcoal instead.

- Put in a layer of soil.

- Add your plants. It is best to use plants that prefer a humid climate.

- Add the cover on and you are finished.

There are many fun things you can do to create an indoor garden. Just be sure to choose your plants carefully, as some plants just will not grow indoors.

Eventually we are all given a house plant either as a gift or a plant from someone who is moving and can't take their plants with them, instantly giving you the basis for indoor gardening. Many times if you don't know how to care for it the plant will wither and die. Other times people start to care for the plant and suddenly become avid gardeners.

Indoor gardens are similar to outdoor gardens, it's just that you are caring for plants in your home instead of in your garden. A big plus to indoor gardening is that it can be enjoyed by people that live in the cities with no access to land. It is also a joyful hobby for people that are confined indoors. The real bonus is that they are healthy for us. Basically plants take in carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen (photosynthesis) thereby purifying the air that we breath. So you have attractive plants with added benefits.

Indoor gardens are ideal for people that live in hard, cold climates or for someone who lives in a climate that gets searingly hot. With an indoor garden the gardener can manipulate the environment so that their plants thrive. If it is dreary, cold and grey wouldn't it be delightful to have gorgeous plants sprinkled around your home that not only add beauty but cheerfulness too?

After choosing the plants you wish to grow you must choose a container for it. You can opt for a small plant that can be placed on a counter or windowsill. Even a large evergreen in a big pot can be placed next to your door or in a sunny spot in the corner. You must make a plan for your indoor garden. Figure out where you want to place your indoor garden so you will know how much space you have for the plants. Once this is done you can choose the container and the plants you wish to grow. Don't forget to research the plants needs, like watering, sunlight and food before you go to the nursery center.

Once you have gathered all of your material you can start planting and arranging your indoor garden in your home. When arranging your garden be sure to put plant that needs bright sun near a window. Plants that just need indirect light should be put in a more comfortable spot of low or indirect sun for them. If you get this wrong you will be throwing out your plants and buying new ones.

Don't overlook planting an indoor herb garden especially if you like to cook. Herbs needs are four to six hours of sun per day and loose easily drained soil. They are pretty plants and will add zip to your meals.

If you have pets carefully choose your plants. Pets and plants must be able to cohabitate in your home peacefully. Some plants are toxic to animals. You have to be sure that your animal and the plant can live together. For instance, a tall plant may be seen as a scratching tool by cats or even a litter box. Cats have been known to wrap themselves around larger plants and snuggle in the warm dirt. Sometimes this can disturb the roots. One way to beat this is to put ornamental rocks or crushed seashells right on top of the soil.

You can have an indoor garden and enjoy all of the benefits of beautiful plants. Just do some research either at you local nursery or on the internet. What are you waiting for? Start planting.

Happy Indoor Garden!

Systems that provide proper ventilation for indoor gardens are key to indoor growing success. Without an abundant supply of fresh air such as your plants would receive in a natural, outdoor environment, your efforts at indoor gardening will soon end in an unpleasant, mini-ecological disaster. In this article, we will discuss some of the reasons why ventilation for indoor gardens is needed, as well as some different options.

Grow Room Ventilation Systems - Overview

As you know, in the natural world, air is virtually always in motion - even on days when the air is "still;" there is almost always a slight breeze due to minor temperature fluctuations over various terrain. When it comes to indoor growing, such grow room ventilation systems are necessary in order to replicated this natural environmental condition. These consists of mechanical devices, such as "squirrel fans" or other air-moving devices, which circulates the air from one side of the indoor growing area to the other.

How Much is Needed?

The amount of ventilation for indoor gardens that you will need is dependent on several factors, including the size of the space in terms of cubic feet, how much of the space is used for indoor gardening, and the time of year. Normally, the rate of air exchange is greater during the summer.

A solitary single-speed fan will usually not be adequate for most indoor growing needs. You can determine this by multiplying the floor area by the height of the room; therefore, an indoor gardening room measuring 10'x 20' in floor area times 10' in height will need enough fan and ventilation capacity to completely refresh 2,000 cubic feet of air at least once per minute during the summer, and once every three minutes during the winter.

Fan Options

"Squirrel fans" and "Squirrel cage blowers" are technically known as shaded pole blowers. These are used in many applications in which heat build-up is a potential problem, such as HVAC systems and automotive climate control as well as high-end computers. They are constructed of two large rings, which are connected by as many as fifty diagonal blades; the entire assembly spins on its radius, drawing air in axially and exiting through a side opening. These are some of the most efficient fans available for grow room ventilation systems.

Several companies manufacture what are known as "whisper fans," which are particularly quiet-running. They tend to cost a bit extra, but if noise is a concern for you, these may one of the best indoor gardening supplies you purchase.

An expert in hydroponics and indoor gardening, Susan Slobac covers the basics of ventilation for growing indoors. Learn about squirrel cage fans, whisper fans and other grow room ventilation systems.

A.K.A. Hope for Brown Thumbs like Me!

As a home stager, I often use high-end faux greenery to stage a home. They are portable, don't die, and if dusted regularly, can look quite warm and inviting. But sometimes you just need the real thing. Here in Connecticut the leaves are falling, squirrels are going "nuts" and there is a crisp edge to the air. What a great time to bring some greenery inside. Many plants even make the air healthier, and surely there are feng shui benefits to bringing nature inside.

You don't to be a budding horticulturist to have a lovely indoor garden. Sure, you could do a whole bunch of research become a resident expert, or just "do it" and get on with things. The key is to pick the right plant, the right pot, and make a commitment to care for your plant.

The Plant

There are some popular choices for beginners. If you're willing to "mist" your plant on a regular basis, select trees or vines from the tropics or sub-tropics (but avoid plants with pointed leaves...not good feng shui). Figs and weeping Figs are low maintenance if you don't move them around and avoid over-watering (once per week is fine). Rubber Trees are low maintenance, but their sap can be poisonous for kids and pets.

You may not know what kind of plant to get, but you do know how much light comes in your window, how much room you have for a plant, and if you have kids or pets to contend with. You also know what you are capable of in terms of plant care.

Now, armed with all this information, go to a reputable local nursery and ask them what they recommend. Don't be ashamed to admit you're a beginner! They're the experts, after all, and they will be thrilled to help you select your plant and answer any questions you may have.

The Pot

There are many pots to choose from. First priority is to make sure it functions well. Is it large enough for the plant to grow? Are you the type of person who may need a self-watering pot (you know who you are!)? Tip: you can add an "Adjustable Reservoir" to an existing pot. If the pot does not have a drain hole in the bottom, just add gravel underneath the potting soil.

Now what good is a fully-function pot if it's not pretty! There are many colors, shapes and styles to choose from. Be true to your decorating style, and don't be afraid to use color! Add staggering heights around the room for more visual interest.

Want to dress up your plant? How about adding decorative pebbles on top of the soil, or creating a dramatic up-lighting by inserting a mini-pot inside the bigger pot with a light point upwards? Use your imagination!

The Care

The whole idea here is to minimize the time needed to keep your plant alive. Hopefully you followed the advice of the nursery employee who helped you select a low-maintenance plant. Follow the care instructions for your particular plant for best results.

When you first bring your plant home, use a good potting soil. Most potting soils include everything your plant will need to stay healthy. Let's face it; busy people are not going to stick to a strict schedule of fertilizing and feeding their plant on a regular basis. Prune your plant as needed, and occasionally dust off the leaves. You may want to stick it in the tub for a shower periodically to keep spider mites away.

Then commit to watering it on a regular schedule. Follow watering instructions based on the type of plant. Believe it or not, over-watering can be worse than under-watering (note: don't use water from sodium-based water softeners).

The Therapy

There are those who are convinced that talking to your plant is therapeutic for your plant. While it may not be scientifically proven, I figure it can't hurt. If nothing else, it's cheaper than a good therapist, so go right ahead - plants are very good listeners. Naming your plant is optional.

On a personal note, after researching for this article, I boldly went into my local nursery, explained my brown thumb dilemma, and came home with a weeping fig (named Benji). We are getting along very well, and I am feeling much better about Connecticut winters! I think I'm going to make it after all.

In college I learned that I love to cook. I also learned that fresh herbs are painfully expensive at the grocery store, especially on my very tight retail clerk's budget. So, one of the very first things that I ever grew from seed was a small pot full of herbs. It was then that I learned just how convenient and easy growing herbs in containers can be. I still grow many container herbs year-round, so I've always got a fresh supply of many culinary ingredients.

Genovese Basil: An absolute must for any herb collection, Genovese Basil is prolific, easy to grow, and is a fantastic basil for most kitchen uses, especially in Italian-inspired cooking. Just a couple of these largish leaves can turn most any normal meal into instant gourmet cooking. Try making your own Pesto: it's an easy, healthy way to impress your guests.

Chives: Besides being so easy to grow that you'll have trouble believing it, Chives are an attractive plant whose unique growing habit lends great contrast to herb gardens (in or out of containers). Plus, there is absolutely no substitute for chives in a variety of recipes. For a really unique flavor, try Garlic Chives.

Cilantro: For Mexican cuisine, Cilantro is an absolute must. It is the perfect herb to compliment the acidic ingredients common in Mexican foods, such as lime and tomato. Also called Coriander, Cilantro is both a spice and an herb in one plant. Use the leaves as the herb Cilantro, and, once it goes to seed, dry the seeds (technically tiny fruit, but I digress) in the sun and grind them into the spice Coriander. The leaves of Cilantro are best fresh, but they can also be used dried or frozen. Try Cilantro Delfino, one of the easiest varieties to grow in a container. It grows quickly, produces lots of leaves, and is slow to bolt, which means that it will produce more delicious cilantro for longer.

Lemon Grass: Just like Cilantro is a must for Mexican food, Lemon Grass is necessary for many Asian dishes. The leaves and stems are delicious fresh or dried, and give a distinct lemony flavor to anything they're in that just can't be replicated. Lemon Grass is great in Asian soups, and is a great addition for unique hot teas.

Red-Leafed Basil: This dark basil brings a spicier, more intense flavor to the kitchen than most other types of basil. For rich, deeply flavorful cuisine, use Red-Leafed basil with artichoke hearts or in nearly anything with vinegar. Crush the leaves into hot vinegar or very warm olive oil to make an amazing foundation for salad dressings, or to lend a unique, subtle flavor to anything sautéed in the oil. It's also a unique, beautiful plant whose dark red foliage can lend great contrast in a planter of mixed green herbs.

You just can't beat an indoor herb garden for an easy, inexpensive way to always have fresh ingredients for your cooking year round. It's also a great project for kids and adds beauty while freshening your air. Give your own indoor herb garden a try this year.

Did you know it's possible to have a great herb garden all throughout the year? All you need is a kitchen and some light and you'll be all set.

The biggest question is what to grow. If you're like me, you want to grow basil, oregano, cilantro and a couple other fabulous herbs. These herbs are not just great, they're space conscious. You won't need loads of space to grow them.

There's many ways to set up your kitchen herb garden for year-round enjoyment. One way would be to get together a couple small pots or containers and put them in a nice spot in the kitchen that gets light-the windowsill is a great place. Once setup, you'll have fresh, natural herbs all year long. Ah, so lovely. Heck, there could even be snow outside and it won't matter.

Your next step will be to get some planters kits. They make them specifically for growing herb gardens inside. You can visit your local nursery or home improvement store to find them. Some craft stores also carry the kits. A typical kit may come with a pot, soil, seeds and perhaps some decorations. In other words, you'll be all ready to go.

Remember, your herbs will need sun, but not so much that they burn. If you're used to shaking your herbs out of a bottle, you don't know what you're missing. Nothing is better than fresh herbs. And with an indoor herb garden being so easy to setup, there's no excuse for not having them always.

An indoor herb garden not only requires little maintenance but it will also provide you with the beauty of having wonderful smelling plants in your own home. But just what is it that I need for growing an indoor herb garden? In this article we will look at what you will need in order to grow many of the pleasantly aromatic herbs that you can buy at your local supermarket today.

1. It is important that you place your herb garden on a sunny windowsill. Preferably one that is south or southeast facing as this will ensure that the garden gets at least 5 hours of sun each day. However, it is also important that you keep the garden away from drafts.

2. You will need a container that has a depth of no more less than 6 inches and no more than 12 into which your herbs can be placed. Also get one which is long enough so that you can plant multiple herbs into or if you do not have the space then use 6" pots for each plant. Into this container or containers you will need to place soil less potting mix which will help to avoid soil born diseases. Your local garden center will be able to help you find the right kind of potting mix that you will need in order to grow a great herb garden.

3. The containers are now ready to fill with plants. So now you have to purchase some of your favorite herbs these can either be purchased from your local garden center or online. Certainly I would suggest when starting a herb garden for the first time you choose such herbs as oregano, chives, mint, rosemary and thyme as they are pretty easy to use and are the most commonly used herbs in most recipes.

4. When watering your herbs it is important that you do this only sparingly as they do not sit well in wet soil and then feed them once a month with a fertilizer that has been specifically designed for use with edible plants.

Growing your very own indoor herb garden can bring a lot of satisfaction. Give this indoor garden a try and as you can see as long as you have the right equipment and the right place in your home you can soon be growing a indoor herb garden which will be the envy of all your friends.

Find the Right Tools

By Christopher J

If you've just set up an indoor garden, you're doubtless excited and want to make sure it grows right and produces results. To do so, you will need to make every effort to ensure your plants get what they need to be as healthy as they can be. For this, you need the proper indoor gardening supplies.

Indoor Gardening Supplies You Need

Indoor gardening supplies are not that much different than gardening supplies for outdoor gardens. However, they differ in that they are specifically designed to use in indoor gardens instead of outdoor gardens and are therefore manufactured to scale. They also are manufactured to cater to the specific needs of indoor gardeners.

For example, if your indoor garden will have many small rocks, you'll want to put gardening tarp at the very bottom underneath the rocks, so that the rocks stay in one place and don't move. As an alternative, if you want to, you can simply use larger rocks that will frame the garden and therefore avoid using the tarp. Whichever you choose, they should match with the overall look of the garden. Play with this and have fun.

Next, look at the tools you'll need for your garden. If the plants you have will require frequent trimming, for example, you'll need gardening shears or another type of trimmer.

Of course, you'll also need the correct soil. Because regular soil from the outdoors usually is shy of having the proper nutrients in it for many indoor plants, you'll need to get gardening soil from your gardening supply or department store. Many specialize in particular kinds of plants, for example, so if your indoor garden is made up of a lot of flowers, for example, you'll want to look for a gardening soil that will support them. Many even have plant food incorporated right into the gardening soil so that you do not need to buy a separate plant food.

Finally, of course, you'll need to water your indoor garden; how frequently you do this will depend on the type of plants you have and how dry the atmosphere is indoors. Check with the nursery you bought your plants from to see how often they need to be watered, or search the Internet for information on the particular kinds of plants you have.

Of course, it's likely that you won't need the same gardening tools for your indoor garden as you would need for your outdoor garden, such as a weed trimmer or gardening claw. However, your nursery will be able to tell you what you will need for tools and will even gladly supply some of them. As always, for anything you can't find, the Internet is a good resource, both for information and for tools for your indoor gardening supplies.

Herb indoor container gardening is growing in popularity, and is made especially easy with the use of an aero garden. Not only are herbs nutritious and tasty foods, they are also grown for their beauty and wonderful aroma. The growing of a herbal garden requires minimal effort to maintain, and in return, provides you with nature's reward.

Indoor container gardening of herbs requires only the amount of space you want to give it, containers, nutrients, soil and water. You will need to purchase containers which are slightly bigger than those provided by nurseries. Transplant into larger containers once the plants have stabilized and are growing well. Six inch terracotta pots with good drainage are preferable. Different herbs should be planted in separate pots to avoid some possible taste transference between plants. Use potting soil from a greenhouse, place pots facing a southern or western direction. Greenhouse staff will be able to give you advice about choosing fertilizer, as well as pointers and information for proper growing of your herbs. Keep the soil damp, and do not over water. An aero garden is another way of cultivating herbs. Aero gardening is a soil free method of growing plants which delivers the right amount of air, water, light and nutrients to your garden.

Indoor container gardening provides you with not only beauty, but also with a constant supply of herbs once they are ready to harvest. The aero garden will hasten the growing period, and will produce a longer harvesting time. You will be able to prepare great tasting and healthy meals with herbs you grow yourself. Basil is not only a beautiful plant, it will also add flavor to tomatoes and meat dishes. Egg dishes, salads and sauces will benefit from the addition of chives. Mint is easy to grow, and will enhance lemonade, and make great mint jelly. Thyme and sage are used with chicken, turkey and sausages. Probably the best smelling herb is lavender, often used in candles, soaps and lotions. There are many other herbs, and many other combinations too numerous to mention in this article.

Indoor container gardening is also cost effective since it is less expensive to grow your own instead of purchasing your herbs at the market. Fresh herbs from the grocery are pricey, and will often wilt after purchase. Shoppers will opt for the dried variety, but unfortunately, this product will not provide you with the nutritional value and flavor the fresh herbs provide. An aero garden can provide you with a fresh supply of your favorite herbs which can be grown faster, with more nutritional value, and with a longer harvesting period, without the mess of working with soil.

You will be rewarded with great herbs when you choose indoor container gardening. Do explore other methods, such as aero gardening, an easy, clean, and quicker way of growing your plants. All will provide you with what you had hoped for and more. Enjoy!

As winter sets in, you usually start getting worried about the plants that you have in your garden because they might not be able to fight the frost or resist the chilly winds. This holds true especially for herbs because they are delicate. Indoor herb gardening is the answer to all your worries regarding your garden. And you don't even have to renovate your home to start growing herbs indoors. A widow that faces the South or West direction and allows sunlight for 5 hours in a day will suffice your need for indoor herb gardening. If you are staying in a high-rise apartment and the only greenery that you get to see is the distant park, then indoor herb gardening is good for you and your apartment too.

Thyme, rosemary and mint are good options as starters for your indoor herb garden. You can grow them from cuttings or buy them from a florist. You can get these plants from a supermarket as well. If you want to start your indoor herb garden this way then you need to initially grow the herbs in a soil-less mix of perlite, peat and vermiculite. You get the directions for use on the package or the greenhouse from where you bought the mix.

If you prefer staying away from all that shopping, then you can start your indoor herb gardening with the seeds. To start, you need to get some pots in which you can grow your herbs. A pot with good drainage, especially terracotta or a clay pot is preferable. Small pots of 6" diameter are perfect for indoor gardening as they are small enough to grow compact plants and allow enough growth as well.

You should have pots of same material, shape and size to bring symmetry in your indoor herb garden. The contrast that you desire can come from the colors and shapes of herbs. Also you should plant different herbs in different pots, rather than 2/3 in the same one so that mint and basil do not taste the same. Herbs that can be directly grown from seeds are basil and Greek Oregano. You need to be careful while choosing the seeds. Buy the ones that are specified as 'compact' as the regular ones are difficult to grow indoors because of their size.

To grow your herbs indoors from seeds you need to fill the pots with potting soil that you can get from any florist or greenhouse. Then tuck the seeds in soil to a certain depth as specified on the packet and spray them with water. These pots should be kept on the window shelf facing the southern or western direction to soak up enough sunlight. You should also keep the soil damp, especially if you live in a dry or overheated apartment. You should not over-water your herbs once you see the sprouts, as the roots may rot.

If you have started your indoor herb gardening with cuttings or via transplant, you should allow the soil to dry out a slightly. Your indoor herb garden should get plenty of light but should not be exposed to extreme heat.

Everyone loves the beauty and serenity offered by a garden. Who does not want to do some gardening indoor? But a garden indoors does not just mean bringing plants inside the house. It is quite a difficult job. If done with proper care, your home could reflect the beauty of nature.

It is quite difficult to sit in an outdoor garden during the cold winter days. You can now enjoy the beauty of a garden sitting at home by doing some gardening indoor. Indoor gardens not only decorate your home but also cleanse the air. Indoor plants add moisture to the air and also filter it by exchanging carbon dioxide with oxygen.

Conditions for Gardening Indoor

There are many varieties of plants that can be grown indoors. Different plants grow in different conditions. One of the essential requirements for gardening indoor is sunlight. Most plants require sunlight to grow. This can be achieved by placing the plants near windows. Else you can choose plants with darker leaves as they do not require much sunlight.

When gardening indoor, you need to take care of water requirements also. But it is not recommended to over-water the plants as this may kill them. This is because the indoor plants are placed in garden containers and when excess water is poured the roots are damaged. Make sure the garden container has a good drainage system. Also check that the soil in the container does not dry out.

When the plants tend to dry out during winter, spray them with a fine mist. You can even try wrapping the plant in a newspaper or cone. This helps in retaining the moisture and keeps the plant looking healthy.

Advantages of Gardening Indoor

There are various advantages of having an indoor garden. Firstly it adds beauty to the house. You get to experience natural beauty inside your home. This is especially useful during winters as it is quite difficult to sit out in a garden during those cold days.

Modern homes are built to conserve energy. This has resulted in a lack of air exchange and hence increases the carbon dioxide and pollutes air at home. This may lead to various health disorders like asthma, allergies, eyes, nose and throat infections, headaches, respiratory and sinus congestion. This can be avoided by doing gardening indoor. Indoor plants purify the air by absorbing the carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.

Some plants that you can consider while gardening indoor are African violets, Philodendrons, Boston Fems, Jade plants etc. Though some plants may be more useful, all plants help purify the air and add an extra sparkle to your house.

Different plants require different conditions for growth. Hence it is better to know more about the plants when planning some gardening indoor. Also, all plants do not require the same kind of fertilization. Indoor fertilizers are available in garden stores and even at some grocery stores.

With proper care and nourishment while gardening indoor, you can make your home beautifully unique and healthy as well!

If you love fresh spaghetti sauce or pesto, than you've just got to have fresh basil and other herbs all year round! Sure, a nice 1 X 4 window garden getting at least 4 or 5 hours of direct light from a sunny window will give you something to pinch here and there. Gardens with mint, rosemary, bay leaf, savory, oregano, chervil, sand thyme are some of the easiest to grow this way.

But what if you need your basil...and lots of it? Basil and cilantro need just a bit more light, and really prefer 8 hours or more of direct light each day. In addition to this if you want fresh pesto, just a pinch here and there is not going to cut it. Here's what you can do about it.

The goal is a vegatative light cycle (18 hours on), with eight or more direct sun or bright artificial light.
Whenever the light levels are low, give them a boost. Two or three fluorescent lights above your plants will greatly increase their growth and yield. You can grow enough basil for a few servings of pesto now and then, and still have enough always at your fingertips.

Or, with a small metal halide light you would have a larger area with better lighting. You could surely produce an abundance of any herbs you choose for your culinary and aromatic delights. Basil would take well to the bright conditions under a metal halide, as it is a Mediterranean, sun loving herb.

It has been said that some herbs grow better, or should be grown in, poor soil. The oils in herbs make them special. Very fast growing herbs often grow plain leaves and stems more quickly than they can produce tasty essential oils. Often you will hear "basil grows better in poor soil" or "your basil will taste better if you don't fertalize". What these people really mean is "don't grow your basil too fast" (sorry to pick on basil).

When growing in a container, it is a little different. The plant still needs some food to grow, and when that food runs out you will need to fertalize. However, as you will see in the next two sections, this is all taken into consideration together with the growth habbits of your herbs.

To keep initial growth rates in control, I use a soil mix with just enough nutrients. Mix 2 parts sphagnum peat to 1 part perlite, and than add 20 percent worm castings. Adjust the Ph of any mix using sphagnum peat moss by adding 2 teaspoons of hydrated lime for every gallon of soil mix. or You can substitute peat with coconut coir or vermiculite, which do not need Ph adjusting. Finally, I add 1 tablespoon of kelp meal for each gallon of soil to add plant hormones and to give beneficial micro-orgnisms something to feed on. Use this mix whenever you transplant.

If you feel the top of the soil and it is dry, than you need to water. Another way is to pick up the container and check how heavy it is. Your herbs like their soil to drain fast. You need to have containers with holes in the bottom, and you need to add an inch or so of perlite or gravel to the bottom of each container as you transplant. It is best to water thoroughly, but less often. Water the container until some water comes out the bottom.

When the herbs have been in any container for ten days or more, you need to begin feeding them. In a container, the roots are stuck in a small space and quickly mine it free of any nutrients, especially if you were going easy on the nutrients to begin with. Feed with half strength nutrient such as Maxsea 16-16-16 every two weeks.

If you really want to keep your plants healthy, I also recommend 10 ml/gallon Thrive Alive B1 and Maxicrop liquid seaweed in every drop of water you give to your plants. The B1 is vitamins and root hormones, and the seaweed is trace nutrients and plant growth hormones. This will help with essetial oil production. Finally, water basil from around the base...it does not like water on its leaves.

As soon as the herbs have grown enough leaves to be pinched without affecting their growth, you can begin using some of the herbs. This is usually about 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the herbs. Herbs like basil are best when harvested before flowers open. You will get your highest essetial oil levels when you harvest at the end of the dark period, assuming you do not
leave the lights on 24 hours a day.

If you like cooking with herbs and have a wish for an herb garden, but don’t have the yard space, consider an indoor herb garden. The most common type of indoor herb gardens are those in which you have a long windowsill and space to place pots on it. But don’t despair; there are other ways to grow herbs indoors.

The first thing to consider before starting your indoor herb garden is that it should have ample light and be unreachable by children and pets. The next thing you need to decide is how large your herb garden can be in the location you have selected. The herbs you plant will all grow to different proportions, some much larger than others, so be sure to plan appropriately.

Select herbs for your indoor herb garden that will grow well together. Some types of herbs will actually take over other less resilient herbs and the result is a hybrid of both. A well known example of this is the oregano plant being planted too close to a peppermint plant. The result is a new plant that will smell like both oregano and peppermint.

Decide what herbs you are interested in planting and how they will be used. You might consider herbs for cooking and herbs for potpourri. There are many different types of herbs and due to those that do not grow well together, you must first complete your research on their growing conditions and their suitability for your indoor herb garden.

Some herbs are harder to grow than others while an herb like chives is hardier and likely to grow in more areas. Make sure the herbs you select will grow well in room temperature. An indoor herb container garden will add some color to your rooms if grown in the correct light and temperature.

With an indoor herb garden, you can have fresh herbs throughout the coldest part of the year. Just be sure to move the herbs as needed to ensure they always receive the right light for optimal growing conditions. Your indoor herb garden will also provide some of the necessary vitamins and minerals necessary for good health, such as cayenne.

For hundreds of years, herbs have been grown for medicinal purposes. For example, Echinacea has proven to be an herb that can shorten the length of a cold. This can be grown in your indoor herb garden along with other herbs that can treat depression during the cold winter months.

Purchase your herbs from a well established nursery that can provide you with information on indoor growing conditions. With the help of an expert, you should be able to follow their instructions to maintain a healthy indoor herb garden throughout the year. Along with the information provided about each herb that will describe the benefits in detail, anyone should be able to produce a wonderful indoor herb garden addition to the most suitable room in their house.

Haven't you always wanted better, fresher, more colorful vegetables from your neighborhood market? You can only guess what those old veggies have been through before their arrival at the store. It's hard to imagine what type of chemicals were used to keep them fresh for weeks at a time and then you're going to bring these into your home where they may sit in your fridge for another week. How much more can a lowly vegetable endure before it starts to rot?

There is a way around this and it's just a perfect idea for the health conscious person... an indoor vegetable garden will satisfy that desire for pure, clean, unadulterated, fresh tasting salad or steamed veggies. You can grow these right in your own kitchen with all the available tools out there.

It doesn't take an agricultural degree to produce vegetables from an indoor vegetable garden; there is tons of information available to assist you along the way. What a great feeling to offer your family safe wholesome food you produced with your new hobby. The tools are available to produce an indoor vegetable garden your own. You can have an indoor vegetable garden on your balcony, (weather permitting) a bright sunny spot in the corner of a room or on a window sill.

You Can Grow A Wide Variety of Produce With An Indoor Vegetable Garden

Your vegetables can be planted in all sorts of containers and areas where that corner needs to be filled. Choose colors to compliment your home and make your indoor vegetable garden blend in with the rest of your living space. Take some measurements of the locations you plan to place the indoor garden and make sure it is the maximum measurement. This way you won't inadvertently purchase a container too big for the space you have.

The lists of containers you can use are limitless. Try using a decorative sheet metal pail, clay pots and even plastic jugs. One of my favorites is the old soup stock pots, these really go well with a kitchen indoor vegetable garden. Just use your imagination and enjoy your new found hobby. Remember, you will be able to grow your vegetables throughout the year, there are no seasons indoors.

Take a trip to the local nursery and explain to the staff that you are starting an indoor vegetable garden; you'll be surprised how much help they will offer. Carrots, radishes, tomatoes and a multitude of other vegetables are well suited for indoor gardening. Make sure to ask about plants and seeds that are specially designed for indoor container gardening. If you're worried about lighting there are many types of fixtures designed for indoor growing. Above all else, enjoy your new indoor vegetable garden hobby. Your body will appreciate it.

Creating an indoor herb garden is quite an easy task as herbs are inexpensive plants that are easy to maintain and are undemanding. An indoor herb garden can be termed as an introductory course for any beginner to the art of gardening.

Depending on their use, herbs can be classified into culinary herbs, medicinal herbs and aromatic herbs. Culinary herbs include basil, rosemary, parsley and oregano. These herbs are used to add spice and flavor in food. Medicinal herbs include plants like echinacea, valerian, hypericum, gingko and garlic that are widely used in medicinal preparations. Oils from plants like lavender, rose, mint and basil are used for aromatherapies. Most of these plants are not suitable for an indoor herb garden as it is difficult to extract the medicinal parts of the plant. Ornamental herbs are those that are grown to enhance the beauty of homes.

You can start with herbs like oregano, rosemary, garlic chives, mint and thyme. You can either buy these plants at a garden center or can use stem cuttings. Containers are useful for growing herbs at home as these are easy to carry and are convenient for adjusting soil mixtures. These containers are available in different colors, thus creating an added attraction. You can also start an indoor herb garden from the seed level. Heavy clay or terra cotta pots are preferred as these pots facilitate good circulation of air and water.

You can have a beautiful indoor herb garden if you follow certain tips. Soilless mixture of vermiculite, peat and perlite ensures proper growth of seeds and seedlings. Keeping pots in the southern or western window ensures proper sunlight and air. Soil in the containers and pots should be moist but not damp. Pots should be kept in shady regions during summers. Humidity around indoor plants can be increased if they are grouped together.

Growing an organic herb garden is a delightful project. The fragrant plants not only look and smell good; they are also good for flavoring foods.

Indoor organic herb gardens have the advantage of being year-round, giving a continuous supply of fresh herbs. An indoor organic herb garden can be as small as a few pots on a window sill or as large as a greenhouse filled with containers of aromatic organic herbs.

Herb Choices

There are many ways to decide which herbs to include in your organic herb garden. Here are some ideas.

1. Italian Herb Garden: Plant rosemary, oregano, basil, fennel, and chives. Terra cotta containers will make your indoor organic herb garden look authentically old world.

2. French Herb Garden: Begin with lemon basil, marjoram, and parsley, and add other herbs you like to use in French cooking.

3. Fragrant Herb Garden: Choose angelica, bergamot, catmint, chamomile, thyme, lavender, lemon balm, mint, and sage. This organic herb garden is a natural air freshener.

4. Tea Herb Garden: If you enjoy herbal teas, your organic herb garden might focus on appropriate herbs for your tea: catnip, chamomile, lavender, lemon grass, mint, and peppermint.

You may not want to theme your indoor organic herb garden, but simply grow a few herbs that appeal to you.

Containers

Many herbs are well-suited to container gardening, but you will want to choose containers according to the herbs you intend to grow.

1. Those tiny herb peat pots sold in discount stores give the wrong idea. Your indoor organic herb garden will not last long with such small thinking.

2. Begin with containers a bit larger than those in which the live nursery plants were purchased. This will give your plants room to start growing.

3. Once your herbs are stabilized and growing well, transplant them into larger containers.

4. Basil, mint, oregano, and sage are examples of herbs that can be grown in pots of about 8 to 10 inches.

5. If you want a large crop of herbs that is constantly being replenished in your organic herb garden, use 3 to 5 gallon containers. This will assure you of having plenty of rosemary, basil, etc. when you want it.

Container Soil

Indoor organic herb gardens call for building organic soil. Your soil should have a pH of about 7, since herbs prefer a more alkaline soil. If yours is too acid, add some calcified seaweed. Be sure you use only organic fertilizers to build your soil.

Indoor Lighting

An indoor organic herb garden will need lighting, especially if your room is not sunny. Lighting is especially important for year-round indoor gardens.

Different plants have different light requirements, some preferring bright sun and others preferring shade. Most herbs prefer full sun, but there are exceptions, so learn what each of your herbs needs.

Incandescent lights, even though called “grow lights”, are a poor choice for your indoor organic herb garden. Fluorescent lights are better, and have the advantage of being inexpensive, easily available, and easy to set up. The best choice for lighting your indoor organic herb garden is high intensity discharge lighting, often called HID lights. These are even more affordable and efficient.

Useful and Beautiful

An indoor organic herb garden can be both useful and beautiful. Herbs are generally eager to please, and require little maintenance. Simply give them the right food, water, and sunlight, and they will reward you abundantly.

Indoor gardening is no more demanding than outdoor gardening and you don't have to have a lot of plants to make a big difference in your home. Just like outdoor plants those that you keep indoors need some basic things such as lighting water and nutrients.

Different types of indoor plants require different amounts of lighting but most plants will grow better with good light. You can help provide this by placing plants near windows where they can get natural light but you may also want to buy a special plant grow light especially for those dark winter days. When choosing plants for your indoor garden, keep in mind that the darker leafed plants usually don't need as much light as the other plants.

Many people tend to kill their indoor plants by overwatering them. While your indoor garden needs water just like your outdoor garden it's important to remember that these plants are in containers and you can't just load them up with a ton of water that will stand in the container and perhaps wrought the roots. Be sure that each container has a good drainage system, perhaps with rocks at the very bottom of the container, and a saucer for the water to drain out into. You should not let the soil get to dry but don't overwater either. Check your in your garden at least once a week to to see if it needs watering.

With indoor gardening, humidity can be a problem particularly in the winter when it is very dry. To keep your plants moisturized you can spray them with a fine mist and if it is really dry dry wrapping the plant in a cone of newspaper or wax paper and missing the play and then. The cold will help keep the moisture into the plant.

Different plants require different kinds and amounts of fertilization. You should be aware of each planning your indoor garden and what its needs are. You can buy indoor fertilizer from any home goods or garden store and you can even buy fertilizer sticks that you stick in the container at the grocery store. Some exotic plants like orchids need special fertilizer of most regular houseplants just use the regular fertilizer you can find in any store.

Here's a few plants you might want to add to your indoor garden:

African violets

These plants have pretty purple flowers and green glossy leaves. They are quite often grown indoors and can add colorful splash to your indoor garden. They like light but don't put them right in the final get scorched. Avoid overwatering as this will kill them.

Philodendrons

These of the most popular and Hardy of all indoor garden plants. They are full of large green leaves and prefer a medium light. It's best to let them dry out a bit between wanderings and you can keep the little dryer in the winter. If the leaves turn brown and you're not watering them enough. They like high humidity but will do okay in most homes. Be sure to wash the leaves off often to remove dust.

Boston Ferns

The Boston fern is a popular indoor plant which produces a thick bundle of leaves. It requires diffused lighting and will need a grow light in rooms where there is not enough natural light. They can be sensitive to chlorine and tap water so watering regularly with distilled water is best. Boston ferns can be a bit difficult to grow as they like cool locations with a lot of humidity. Misting your Boston fern each day can help it be happy and healthy.

Jade Plant

They Jade Plant is a succulent and can tolerate very dry conditions. These plants are extremely tolerant and difficult to kill so few one start in indoor garden but don't have a green calm you do well to consider one of these.

Growing herbs in your garden can be a great way to get fresh herbs for cooking or medicinal purposes. In many cases you can grow them right in with your other flowers, or keep them in containers so that you can bring them inside in the winter months for a bountiful indoor herb garden.

Herbs can be perennials or biennials so you need to plant them with this in mind. You wouldn't want to put your biennials in the back row knowing that you might have to trample over some perennials to get to them and replant. Since herbs can be decorative as well as useful, pay particular attention to how tall they are and what they look like when they flower so that you can incorporate them into your garden accordingly.

One thing to keep in mind when growing herbs is that they like a sandy, well drained soil that has a neutral PH. An interesting thing to note is that a very fertile soil is not recommended for herbs since this will encourage excess leaf growth which will reduce the flavor of the plant. Organic matter is great for herbs so consider adding some compost or peat moss to your soil.

One interesting thing about herb plants is that most pests tend to avoid them and they are not highly susceptible to diseases either, so a herb garden can be rather easy to maintain.

Harvesting herbs at the right time will insure that you get them when they are their most flavorful and potent. For most herbs this is shortly before the flowers are to bloom (except for mints which are most flavorful when in full bloom). You want to pick the third sunny day in a row and be sure to harvest in the morning right after the dew has evaporated.

While growing herbs outdoors will yield you the most productive plants, you can still have a great indoor herb garden as long as you have a window with plenty of sunlight and good well drained soil. You should put them in a southerly facing window and you might consider supplementing the light with a grow light in the winter months. Be sure your pots allow for plenty of drainage and never leave your herb plants to sit in a saucer of water. When summer comes, consider placing your herbs outdoors so they can flourish.

Whether you are growing herbs outdoors or want an indoor herb garden on your kitchen windowsill, trying your hand at herb gardening can be a fun way to get great plants, enjoy a relaxing hobby and add some spice to your cooking!

Many people take great pleasure in their gardens, though they are usually situated outside. Some gardeners, however, take part in another form of gardening, and that’s indoor gardening.

Indoor gardening offers some perks that you can’t get from outdoor gardening. However, just as there are perks, there are also drawbacks. This article will examine both. You will also find places to situate your indoor garden, what types of flowers and plants you can grow, as well as some gardening tips to help your indoor garden flourish.

Why Plant Indoors?
Many people don’t realize that planting indoors can be more beneficial to plants, but it is also a lot of work. Indoor gardening is more beneficial because you, the gardener, get to control the environment, the weather, what foods and nutrients your plants receive, and anything else that you would normally have to trust to nature.

Probably the best advantage to indoor gardening is that you can keep pests at bay easier when your garden is set indoors.

The Drawbacks
The drawbacks to indoor gardening are that you have to be very observant as to the needs and desires of your plants. As you get more experienced, you will be able to tell exactly what your plants need just by looking at them. For instance, by seeing the leaves or flowers change a certain color, you can tell if a certain chemical is depleted from its roots or soil.

You have to keep a constant watch, however, as you don’t have the benefit of nature to nurture your plants. Instead of the rain, you have to water your indoor garden yourself. Instead of sunlight, you have provide the lighting yourself and you also have to provide all the nutrients that your plants or flowers will require. This means that, probably the biggest drawback to indoor gardening, you have to put up a lot of the cost up front.

You have to buy the lighting, such as high powered sodium bulbs, which produce light equivalent to that of the sun and that are beneficial for growing plants. They aren’t cheap, however, and neither are all of the other materials you may need. To start, you will need the equipment, of course, but you also need to determine which types of plants you want to grow.

The best indoor gardening plant is the cactus, as it doesn’t require much care, such as constant watering, and it can be maintained easily. The cactus is a great plant to practice with until you get better and can move on to other plants and flowers. You can also visit your local garden center and ask the associate about proper garden design, what you will need as well as where you should place it, such as on your patio or in your house.

If you have a green thumb, then this should be an easy venture for you. If you don’t know much about gardening, however, you should probably stick to an outside garden before you attempt your hand at indoor gardening.

An indoor herb garden might be a good option for many reasons. Not everybody has the luxury of having even a patch of soil for a garden outdoors, with most of the population of the world crammed into cramped flats. Alternately, you might be living in a cold place where even if you do have a garden, for fresh herbs during winter, you will need another option - this is where an indoor herb garden becomes the perfect solution.

However, you have to keep a few things in mind while planning out your indoor herb garden. The first thing you have to do is choose what herbs to plant. Some popular and practical choices are Mint, Sage, Basil, Parsley, Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme, Dill, Chives and Angelica.

When you buy the seeds or seedlings for this indoor herb garden, make sure that you get them either from others with gardens or from some dealer you trust.

Before you actually buy them, you have to choose the right spot for your indoor herb garden. The first consideration is light. If you can find a spot where the herbs will get plenty of natural light, great, you are set to start. If you cannot find a place like that, choose a place with as much natural light as possible, and press into service a couple of grow lamps, that is, fluorescent lamps, which will help.

Now you have to get the soil right, before you actually start planting. Getting the soil just right is important, so sterilized soil specially meant or potting, which is easily available, is a good way to go. However, you might consider mixing in one third coarse sand with it to get it just right. Next, a bit of lime to make sure that the sweetness is right is a good idea. Just a teaspoon will do for a five inch pot. Also, you have to consider drainage - gravel at the bottom, about an inch, will take care of that.

There is not such thing as the right or wrong pot, as long as it is big enough for your herbs. Old pots and kettles can all be used. It might be a fun activity for your children if you ask them to 'dress' the pots.

Now it is back to the basics of taking care of your herbs - water these herbs regularly, but do not drown them, keep them out of the frost, except for those few herbs that a slight frost benefit, and give them all the tender loving care you can. Talk to them, sing to them - do everything you do for your herbs, and your indoor herb garden will thrive.

This is for all the new gardeners who want to sow different varieties of indoor plants, including edible and decorative ones. If you would like to know some simple, but practical home-grown wisdom regarding a garden that's easy to maintain and gives you both body and soul nourishment, then read on.

Though some people seem to have all the luck, along with large spaces to maintain a kitchen garden, others, such as those who live in an apartment, have only small spaces. Still others have no a backyard, yet all can indulge in gardening as a hobby growing potted vegetables, herbs, floral plants and indoor greens.

A good choice for flowering plants that do well even when there's limited areas for growth, such as planter boxes and pots that have been prepped with potting soil are nasturtiums of the compact kinds such as Whirlybird and Copper Sunset.

Marigolds, Iceland poppies plus smaller varieties of sunflowers are another option that will surly make your indoor garden area happy. These plants are short, easy to care for and not likely to take over your walls the way trailing plant varieties tend to!

If you've chosen herbs for your indoor garden, small tin-pot containers work well, as long as you make sure the needed sunlight (a minimum of 4 hours) and water nourishment is provided regularly. You can check your local nursery for prepared soil-mixes that will contain the right balance of grub for indoor garden glories.

Make sure you check for proper drainage (at the base) of your plant containers. Punch holes if these are missing, so that excess moisture escapes and your plants get the needed warmth as well.

If you're planting herb seeds, try an old home gardener's trick by pre-soaking them for a few hours before planting them in pots filled with potting soil. Next, cover the seeds with a quarter inch more of soil after you've randomly scattering them over the base soil and rosemary and thyme will surely see you through the season with a their wonderful aromas!
